Annual Report on the Consumer Price Index

This annual publication provides a detailed analysis of the major price movements of consumer goods and services during the reference year. This is useful for understanding the inflation that affects consumers. For each of the four series of Consumer Price Index (CPI), namely the Composite CPI, CPI(A), CPI(B) and CPI(C), the movements of the all-item indices and the indices of the 9 commodity/service sections are analysed. This publication also contains charts which depict the movements of the CPIs, tables on the seasonally adjusted CPIs, and descriptions of the concepts and computation method of the CPIs. In particular, this report gives a brief account of the source of data (including survey data and administrative data) as well as the CPI computation framework at Appendix III, IV and V.

Hong Kong External Merchandise Trade Statistics - Dissemination

This publication provides the most up-to-date trade in goods figures on a monthly basis. It is useful for short-term analysis on Hong Kong's trade performance. Hong Kong External Merchandise Trade Statistics - Use of Customs and Non-Customs Data Sources

External merchandise trade statistics cover movements of merchandise between Hong Kong and her trading partners, by land, air, water and by post. Movements of exempted articles, gold and species are not included. These statistics are compiled based on information contained in import/export declarations.

Unit value index is compiled to deflate value index in the derivation of quantum index. In the compilation of unit value index, price indices of selected commodity items obtained from a specification price survey of imports and exports are used. For other commodity items, a simple unit value approach is used.

These publications contain details about lodgment of import/export declarations and the data source for compiling trade indices.

Upon the official release of the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities Revision 4 (ISIC Rev. 4) by the United Nations Statistics Division in August 2008, the Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification Version 2.0 (HSIC V2.0), which adopts the basic framework and principles of the ISIC Rev. 4 and reflects the structural shift in the economy of Hong Kong and emerging local economic activities, was released on 31.10.2008.

The feature article describes the development and implementation of Hong Kong Standard Industrial Classification Version 2.0 (HSIC V2.0), with particular highlights on the changes from the HSIC V1.1 to HSIC V2.0, namely, changes in structure of classification scheme, changes for enhancing international comparability, and changes initiated by Hong Kong to better meet the requirements of local users.

The Harmonized System (HS) has been designed by the World Customs Organization (WCO) to serve as a multi-purpose classification suitable for use by customs and statistical authorities, traders, carriers and others concerned with international trade. This publication contains commodity codes classified under Hong Kong Harmonized System (HKHS). The HKHS uses an 8-digit classification system, with the first 6-digit adopting the HS and the 7th and 8th digits representing a further breakdown in commodity classification to meet the needs of Hong Kong. In addition to the classification list of commodity for Section I - XXII, this publication includes other classification systems needed for completing import and export declarations, namely classification of country/territory, classification of unit of quantity and classification of transport mode.

It publishes statistics on total receipts and total purchases of all restaurants as well as statistics on value and volume indices of restaurant receipts by type of restaurant. Moreover, the movement of total restaurant receipts volume in terms of the year-on-year rate of change for a quarter compared with the same quarter in the preceding year based on the original series, and in terms of the rate of change of a quarter compared with the preceding quarter based on the seasonally adjusted series are also presented.

Monthly Survey of Retail Sales of the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region

This monthly publication presents up-to-date information on the movement of consumer spending in retail trade. It publishes statistics on value and value index of retail sales, both analysed by type of retail outlet. Statistics on volume index of retail sales by type of retail outlet are also released. In addition, statistics on value of retail sales by broad product category are also provided for supermarkets and department stores. Moreover, the movement of total retail sales volume in terms of the year-on-year rate of change for a month compared with the same month in the preceding year based on the original series, and in terms of the rate of change for a three-month period compared with the preceding three-month period based on the seasonally adjusted series are presented.

Purchasing Power Parities and Real Expenditures, United States and Canada, 2002 to 2009

This paper provides the latest annual results for the U.S./Canada purchasing power parities (PPPs) and real expenditure indexes in the U.S. compared with Canada for the period 2002 to 2009. Revisions to previously published data and an update using the most recent US and Canada expenditure data from the National Accounts and in-depth price comparisons for 2005 are incorporated. The paper provides a primer on purchasing power parities and related measures and why they are important in international comparisons of economic performance. It also describes a new projection methodology for total economy measures that are now based on Gross Domestic Income and shows the impact of this change on the data.

This paper provides some background information on revisions within the Income and Expenditure Accounts as well as a detailed revisions analysis of the quarterly real growth rate of GDP. The analysis of revisions strives to ascertain if preliminary estimates have been significantly different from the final estimate, thereby indicating reliability needs to be improved. The revisions analysis presented here looks at the behaviour of the revisions to quarterly real GDP growth rate for the period 1981 to 2007 with the objective of determining if a significant bias exists.
