Energy Statistics Yearbook

Introduction
The Energy Statistics Yearbook is a comprehensive collection of international energy statistics prepared annually by the United Nations Statistics Division. The 2008 edition of the Energy Statistics Yearbook is the fifty-second in a series of annual compilations which commenced under the title World Energy Supplies in Selected Years, 1929-19501. Supplementary series of monthly and quarterly data on production of energy may be found in the Monthly Bulletin of Statistics2.

Contents
The Energy Statistics Yearbook provides internationally comparable data in the supply of primary and secondary forms of energy. Data for each type of energy product and aggregate data for the total mix of commercial fuels, electricity and heat are shown for individual countries and areas and are summarized into regional and world totals.

This 2008 Energy Statistics Yearbook contains data in original and common units (coal equivalent, oil equivalent, joules) for the years 2005-2008. Complete time series for the period 1950-2008 are available in the Energy Statistics Database.

The Energy Statistics Yearbook is bi-lingual (English and French) and is available in printed and electronic (PDF format) versions.

Compilation
The data are compiled primarily from the UNSD Annual Questionnaire on Energy Statistics and supplemented with data from official national statistical publications and specialized and intergovernmental agencies. Where official data are not available, estimates are made by the Statistics Division based on governmental, professional or commercial materials. Estimates include, but are not limited to, extrapolated data based on partial year information, use of annual trends, trade data based on partner country reports, breakdowns of aggregated data as well as analysis of current energy events and activities.

Data Sources
In addition to the annual questionnaire, data sources used in supplementing our statistics include:

  • Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
  • International Atomic Agency (IAEA)
