Workshop on Preparing Evidence-based Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) for 2021 HLPF

18 - 19 Jan 2021   Virtual

One of the critical follow-up and review mechanisms for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is the Voluntary National Review (VNR) prepared by Member States and presented at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). In July 2021, forty-four countries plan to present a VNR at the HLPF, many of whom (35 countries) presenting a review for the second or third time. These VNRs, prepared through a country-led process, facilitate the sharing of experiences - both successes and challenges - among Member States, with a view toward accelerating implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Data and statistics are the backbone of any meaningful and evidence-based review of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, the COVID-19 crisis is causing serious disruptions to critical statistical operations across the entire world. The Workshop on Preparing Evidence-based Voluntary National Reviews for 2021 HLPF invites the 44 countries presenting their VNR in 2021 to highlight responses to the COVID-19 crisis in terms of data collection and the implementation of the SDGs, as well as discuss and share best practices and lessons learned (especially from those presenting the VNR a second or third time) on how data and statistics can support a data-driven and evidence-based VNR process. The workshop is organized around the following themes: (i) national SDG monitoring mechanisms and processes; (ii) assessing and including the impacts of COVID-19 in VNRs; (iii) integrating new data sources and data innovations for official statistics and partnerships with stakeholders (iv) data disaggregation and leaving no one behind; and (v) communicating data in VNRs and engaging data users.
