Regional Training Workshop on Economic Statistics SDMX
Strengthening Trade and National Accounts data reporting and exchange mechanism

For many years, international organisations have been collecting - and exchanging among each other - trade and macro-economic data from countries to respond to user needs as regards the availability of data for economic analysis and decision making. Recently, several international organisations have taken a further step in making selected statistics more readily available thanks to close collaboration and the implementation of the Statistical Data and Metadata Exchange (SDMX) standard.
SDMX is the preferred data transmission standard on statistical data as noted in UN Statistical Commission report on Decision 12 on its thirty-ninth session (2008). And in addition, SDMX is an ISO standard (ISO 17369:2013) designed to describe statistical data and metadata, normalize data exchange and improve their efficient sharing across statistical and similar organizations.
For Trade, a working group consisting of Eurostat, the International Trade Centre (ITC), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) have been working to specify uniform structures, concept definitions and code lists for the transmission of IMTS data and metadata in accordance with SDMX, called SDMX-IMTS or simply Trade SDMX.
On the National Accounts side, the Inter Agency Group on Economic and Financial Statistics whose membership includes the Bank for International Settlements, the European Central Bank, Eurostat, the International Monetary Fund, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the United Nations and the World Bank has worked on the creation of Data Structure Definitions (DSDs) in order to implement SDMX in National Accounts according to SNA 2008 / ESA 2010; this comprises in particular the definition of SDMX Data Structures for exchanging data from reporting countries to international organisations and between the organisations (and possibly beyond) as well as the maintenance of the DSDs over time.
Within this context, the UNSD in collaboration with ADB, ASEAN, and EU-ASEAN ARISE project will conduct a Regional Training Workshop on Economic Statistics SDMX to raise awareness on SDMX-IMTS artifacts including data structure, concepts and code lists; and to train IT experts, National Accounts and Trade statisticians in using latest SDMX tools to map their databases in to generate valid SDMX outputs. The workshop will take place in Manila, Philippines from 24 to 28 February 2020 and will be attended by around 10 Southeast Asia countries and various Regional Economic Communities.
