Description:
On-line database publishing
Request
The TSG considered the classification of On-line database publishing in ISIC and the CPC.
Discussion
21/6/2001 - TSG meeting:
Re. the draft explanatory note for ISIC 3.1,
there was some discussion on the use of "exclusive" with regard to the classification of on-line publishing, based on a user reply. This is an exception to the general value-added rule and should be noted as such. Include this in section E.1. of the introduction or somewhere in a separate list.
The final agreement was to deal with it only in the explanatory note in order not to artificially enlarge this issue.
Decision
On-line database publishing comprises the development of data bases, I.e. the assembly of data from one or more sources, the electronic storage of this information in a pre-determined format and the service of making this information available to users on-line. The latter includes remote access (e.g. through the Internet) to the data as a whole, pre-defined subsets or dynamically created subsets defined by the user at the time of access. The access may available free, on a subscription basis or to selected clients only.
This activity is classified in ISIC class 7240 (Database activities) and CPC subclass 84300 (On-line information provision services).
