United Nations Africa Regional Meeting on Disability Measurement and Statistics in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 2020 World Population and Housing Census Programme

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), in collaboration with the African Center for Statistics of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ACS-ECA) and the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, is organizing a Regional Meeting on Disability Measurement and Statistics in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 2020 World Population and Housing Census Programme for the African region. This meeting is part of a series of regional meetings being organised in different regions of the world. Its objective is to review and discuss national experiences, including challenges faced and lessons learned, to measure the population with disabilities during censuses of the 2010 round. The Regional Meeting will also provide an opportunity to discuss strategies for compilation of data on disability for the monitoring of Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, the Regional Meeting will foster intra-regional cooperation aimed at enhancing national capacity in disability measurement and improving the quality of data for monitoring the SDGs.
Workshop on integrating a gender perspective into statistics

The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), in collaboration with the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), is organizing a capacity building workshop for sub-Saharan African countries on Integrating a Gender Perspective into Statistics. The workshop will take place in Kampala, Uganda from 4 to 7 December 2012. The purpose of the workshop is to present the newly developed Manual for Integrating a Gender Perspective into Statisticsand train national statisticians on the production and use of gender statistics.
United Nations workshop on census data evaluation for English-speaking African countries

The objectives of the workshop are to strengthen the technical capacity of the participating countries to evaluate the quality of their census data and identify any errors. Over the course of the workshop, some of the most commonly used techniques for the assessment of data relating to the age and sex structure of the population, fertility, mortality, migration, and socioeconomic characteristics of the population will be covered. In doing so, the workshop aims to draw participants’ attention to the importance of data evaluation as a step in the census process, as well as to provide them a hands-on opportunity to practice the fundamentals of conducting a census evaluation through demographic analysis. The workshop will also provide a forum to discuss national practices and to exchange experiences among the participating countries.

National workshop on CensusInfo
05-12-2011 – 09-12-2011 Kampala
Organized by UNSD in collaboration with Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), the workshop is designed to demonstrate through in-depth, hands-on experiences, the potential of CensusInfo as a platform for disseminating census data at any geographical level. The participants of UBOS will learn various processes involved in the adaptation of CensusInfo including preparation of CensusInfo template and database, importing data, language translation and customization of the software package. The sessions will include hands-on training on using CensusInfo User Interface and Database Administration applications as well as an introduction in the process of web-enabling the CensusInfo database. The objective of the training is to create a first version of a Uganda CensusInfo application including maps and a subset of data/indicators based on data of the 2002 census and earlier censuses if available.
United Nations Workshop on Disability Statistics for Africa

The overall objective of the Workshop was to strengthen national capabilities to produce, disseminate and use data on disability for policy development and implementation. To achieve this objective, the Workshop brought together producers and users of disability statistics to promote understanding of data collection issues and how to specify the required data for policy formulation. The specific objectives of the Workshop were to: 1. Initiate a dialogue between producers and users of disability statistics in the countries and the region; 2. Enable the exchange of information and experiences of the participating countries and/or organizations; 3. Review methodologies and instruments used in other countries to measure disability; 4. Discuss the use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) as the conceptual framework for collecting and classifying data on disability; 5. Provide guidance on planning for the collection and utilization of policy relevant data on persons with disabilities.
