The 2025 SDG Indicator Review: Enhancing the Global Monitoring Framework for Greater Impact

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development underscores the importance of robust monitoring frameworks to track progress toward the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets. Underpinning the 2030 Agenda, the global SDG indicator framework plays a critical role in providing the data necessary for evidence-based policymaking, promotes transparency, and fosters accountability across local, national, and global levels. As part of its mandate under General Assembly resolution A/RES/71/313, the Inter-agency and Expert Group on SDG Indicators (IAEG-SDGs) recently completed the 2025 Comprehensive Review to ensure the framework remains relevant, adaptive, and aligned with evolving global priorities.

A key focus of the event were the outcomes of the 2025 Comprehensive Review, presenting major updates to the framework, insights from the review process, and new indicators that address emerging global priorities and challenges. These major changes reflect the global community's commitment to improve the indicator framework to better monitor the 2030 Agenda's ambitious goals.

The webinar also featured an "Indicator Spotlight" session, highlighting efforts to enhance data coverage and utilize innovative approaches. Country-led initiatives and global efforts were showcased and discussed, offering practical insights into addressing data gaps and ensuring robust reporting on the SDGs.

Participants were also heard how these experiences can help shape the future framework that will underpin the post-2030 Agenda, highlighting lessons learned along the way by the IAEG-SDGs in maintaining the global SDG indicator framework. The event provided an opportunity for sharing insights, fostering peer learning, and driving forward a data-driven approach to sustainable development.
