Purpose:
The OECD wealth guidelines were developped to adress the common ceptual, defitional and pratical problems that countries face in producing statistics on the level and distribution of household wealth, as well as to improve the comparability of the country data currently available, in an area where no statistical standard exist. These guidelines were also developped to facilitate the integration of micro statistics on household wealth with those relating to other dimensions of economic well-being, such as income and consumption.
Main Applications:
There has been a growing demand for micro data on the distribution of household wealth, alongside income data. Wealth data at the micro level are needed for research and analysis in many different fields; they can support the design and evalaution of a wide range of economic and social policies.

Methodology
Scope:
The concept of wealth used in the OECD Guidelines refers to the stock of economic capital over which people can exercise ownership rights. These economic resources take the form of assets and liabilities. The OECD wealth classification has a micro perspective, complementing the broad economy/production perspective on macro statistics articulated in the System of National Accounts. While many of the wealth concepts used in macro and micro-statistics are the same, there are some differences. Main Principles:
The classification refers to the distribution of non-financial and financial assets and liabilities across households (rather than across persons or adults), with no adjustment made to reflect differences in household size (which is the convention typically used when analysizing the distribution of household income). The data refer to the assets and liabilities held by private hosueholds resident in the country at a given point in time. Assets and laibilities are classified based on a nomenclature proposed by the OECD Guidelines for Micro Statistics on Household Wealth.
